Authorities in Houston are investigating after the body of a man was recovered from Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston on Tuesday afternoon. The discovery marks the first confirmed case of a body being found in the city’s waterways in the 2026 calendar year, according to officials.
Emergency crews responded to the scene near the University of Houston–Downtown after a maintenance crew working nearby reported seeing a body floating in the water.

Discovery Near Downtown Houston
The incident was reported shortly before 2 p.m. along Commerce Street, between Fannin Street and North Main Street near North San Jacinto Street. The location sits close to several public walkways and parks that run alongside Buffalo Bayou.
A cleaning crew performing routine maintenance in the area noticed what appeared to be a person in the water and immediately contacted authorities. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene within minutes.
Emergency Response and Recovery
The Houston Fire Department arrived at approximately 1:52 p.m. Fire officials confirmed that the individual was deceased upon arrival. Crews then worked to safely recover the body from the bayou.
Houston police officers secured the area while the recovery was underway. Once the body was removed from the water, investigators with the Houston Police Department began their initial assessment at the scene.
Officials confirmed the man was fully clothed at the time of recovery. No additional physical details were released.
