Miss Juneteenth is a 2020 American drama film written and directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples in her feature directorial debut. The film follows Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), a former beauty queen and single mother living in Fort Worth, Texas. Once crowned Miss Juneteenth, she is now determined to prepare her teenage daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) for the same scholarship pageant she once won. The pageant offers a life-changing scholarship to an HBCU, making it a powerful opportunity for Kai’s future. However, as Turquoise pushes her daughter toward this goal, tensions rise between ambition, identity, and Kai’s desire to choose her own path. Starring Nicole Beharie, Kendrick Sampson, and Alexis Chikaeze, the film explores themes of Black motherhood, generational dreams, resilience, and cultural heritage tied to Juneteenth traditions.
