A 34-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking a woman inside a Target store in Simi Valley, California, in a violent incident that authorities say occurred less than 24 hours after his release from custody.
Attack Inside Busy Target Store
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, the incident took place on June 17, 2026, at the Target located at 51 Tierra Rejada Road.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as Rejean Morgan Tabor, approached a female shopper from behind while she was standing in a checkout line and allegedly began strangling her, covering her nose and mouth during the attack.
Bystanders Rushed In to Stop Assault
Shoppers in the store quickly intervened after witnessing the attack.
Authorities say several Good Samaritans pulled the suspect away from the victim. During the struggle, Tabor allegedly pushed one woman to the ground and attacked others who attempted to help, including biting, striking, and scratching one bystander.
Violence Continued Across the Store
After the initial victim managed to escape, investigators say the suspect continued his behavior inside the store.
He allegedly threw a glass bottle at a Target loss prevention employee and later attacked a 16-year-old customer from behind before store staff and witnesses helped evacuate the area.
Simi Valley police arrived shortly after and located the suspect in the grocery section of the store, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Multiple Charges Filed
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Tabor has been charged with felony willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder, along with additional counts tied to multiple victims.
The charges include child abuse, battery, and assault related to the broader attack involving at least five victims.
Court Proceedings and Mental Competency Review
During his initial court appearance, proceedings were suspended after his attorney raised questions about his mental competency.
He did not enter a plea and remains in custody at the Ventura County Main Jail on $750,000 bail. A competency hearing is scheduled for July 16, 2026.
Release Before Incident Sparks Concern
Officials said the attack occurred shortly after Tabor was released on mandatory supervision following completion of prior sentences in Ventura County.
Authorities confirmed he has a long criminal history dating back several years, including multiple arrests for violent and disorderly conduct-related offenses.
Victims Recovering After Attack
The woman who was initially targeted was transported to a hospital by family members and is reported to be in stable condition.
Other individuals injured while intervening were treated at the scene and released.
