Six members of the same family were found dead inside an apartment in Mechanicville, New York, on June 23, 2026, prompting an active criminal investigation. Authorities say the deaths appear to be an isolated incident, and investigators believe there is no threat to the public as they work to determine exactly what happened.
Welfare Check Leads to Discovery
The victims were discovered Tuesday evening inside an apartment at the John S. Moore Homes housing complex on Harris Avenue in Mechanicville, a city located north of Albany.
Police responded after concerned neighbors requested a welfare check, reporting that they had not seen the family for an extended period. Officers entered the residence with assistance from property management and found all six individuals deceased inside.
Three Generations of Family Identified
Authorities identified the victims as:
- Amy Steadman, 64
- Sarah Myers, 44
- Harper Harmon, 13
- Hudson Harmon, 11
- Gavin Harmon, 10
- Gracelynn Harmon, 10
Investigators said the victims represented three generations of the same family.
Investigation Focuses on Circumstances of Deaths
Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt said investigators recovered prescription and over-the-counter medications from the apartment.
While final autopsy and toxicology results remain pending, authorities said evidence collected at the scene suggests several of the deaths may have resulted from intentional poisoning. Investigators also confirmed that one child suffered a fatal sharp-force injury.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that conclusions regarding the exact cause and manner of death will depend on forensic testing.
Handwritten Note Recovered
Police confirmed that a handwritten note was found inside the apartment.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the contents of the note, citing the ongoing investigation. Detectives continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews as they work to establish a timeline of events.
Community Mourns Tragic Loss
The deaths have deeply affected the small Saratoga County community, where residents have begun leaving flowers and tributes in memory of the family.
Local officials and support organizations have also made grief resources available to residents impacted by the tragedy.
Investigators said additional information will be released as forensic testing and the criminal investigation continue.
