Six people, including two children, were killed in a fiery head-on collision on Saturday afternoon in Hill County, Texas, after two vehicles crashed on State Highway 171 near FM 3155 between Bynum and Malone, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. and left both vehicles engulfed in flames.
Wrong-Lane Attempt Led to Deadly Crash
Investigators said a Nissan traveling northbound attempted to pass another vehicle in a passing zone but entered the oncoming lane.
The vehicle then collided head-on with a Ford van, causing both vehicles to immediately catch fire and become fully engulfed, officials said.
Six Victims Confirmed Dead
Authorities confirmed that four people inside the Ford van — two adults and two children — were killed at the scene. The two occupants of the Nissan also died in the crash.
A third child inside the van survived the collision and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Children Were Students at Local School
Officials confirmed that the two children who died were students at Hillsboro Elementary School. The school community is now receiving support following the tragedy.
Highway Closed for Hours After Crash
State Highway 171 was shut down in both directions for several hours as emergency crews responded, cleared wreckage, and investigators documented the scene.
The highway has since reopened, but authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
Investigation Continues
Texas DPS has not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
