Two adults were killed and a child was injured in a shooting at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library, police said.


Two adults were killed and a child was injured after a shooting inside the Chico branch of the Butte County Library in Chico, California, on Monday evening, June 22, 2026. Police responded within minutes, took a suspect into custody, and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Gunfire Reported Inside Library

The incident began at approximately 5:12 p.m. when dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter inside the library. Authorities said an open emergency line captured the sounds of gunfire and people screaming inside the building.

Chico police officers arrived around 5:18 p.m. and quickly formed an entry team before entering the library to confront the threat.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

As officers entered through the front of the building, the suspect fled through a rear exit. Officers stationed around the perimeter detained the individual without further incident. Police confirmed that no officers fired their weapons during the arrest.

Investigators said the suspect is believed to have acted alone and that a single firearm was recovered during the investigation.

Two Adults Killed, Child Injured

Authorities confirmed that two adults died in the shooting. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of family members.

A juvenile also suffered injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Police described the injuries as minor and non-life-threatening.

Investigation Continues

The Chico Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI. Officials said no motive has been identified at this time.

Police expect additional information to be released after next of kin have been notified and investigators complete interviews with witnesses.

Library Branches Closed Following Shooting

In the aftermath of the shooting, Butte County officials announced that all county library branches would remain closed on Tuesday, June 23.

A family reunification center was established for those who were inside the library at the time of the incident while investigators processed the scene.
