One person was killed and nine others were wounded in a mass shooting late Saturday night in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood, police said.
The shooting happened around 11:37 p.m. on August 29 in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. Chicago police officers were already at the park trying to disperse a large gathering when gunfire broke out.
Ten people were struck by gunfire. A 35-year-old man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The nine other victims were transported to area hospitals.
No Chicago police officers were injured.

Police said the shooting occurred while a large crowd had gathered in the area near Cottage Grove Avenue. Officers were attempting to disperse the crowd when unknown people began firing.
The nine wounded victims included men and women between the ages of 23 and 45. Six victims were reported in good condition, while authorities had not initially released conditions for three others.
The victims included a 34-year-old man who was shot in the shoulder, a 39-year-old man who was wounded in the leg and arm, and a 40-year-old woman who was shot in the shoulder. A 45-year-old woman was also wounded in the leg.
A 26-year-old woman was shot and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. A 42-year-old man was also wounded and transported to the hospital. Police had not released the conditions of three additional victims, ages 23, 35 and 37.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people ran for safety after the gunfire began. Police officers and emergency crews responded as investigators secured the area and began collecting evidence.

Chicago police Area One detectives are investigating the shooting. As of Sunday, authorities had not announced an arrest or identified a suspect publicly.
Police also had not confirmed how many people opened fire or identified a motive for the shooting.
