Teen boy dies after falling from abandoned building in Joliet

A 16-year-old boy died early Sunday morning after falling about 100 feet from an abandoned industrial building in Joliet, Illinois, police said.

The incident happened around 12:58 a.m. on August 30 near Louise Ray Parkway, east of Collins Street. Joliet police officers responded after receiving a report that someone had fallen from a nearby abandoned structure.

The Incident

Officers arrived and found the teenager critically injured after he reportedly fell from an abandoned rock quarry structure. Police and Joliet Fire Department personnel provided emergency medical treatment at the scene.

Despite those efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the property by the Will County Coroner's Office. Authorities have not publicly released his identity.

Police said the teenager was with four other juvenile boys when the incident occurred. The group had entered the abandoned property to explore and eventually made their way to an upper portion of the structure.

According to preliminary information from police, the 16-year-old fell through an opening in the structure and dropped approximately 100 feet.

The four other boys were taken to the Joliet Police Department after the incident. Investigators interviewed them as part of the investigation before releasing them to their parents.
