3 dead, 6 injured in Minneapolis apartment shooting

Three people are dead, including the suspected shooter, and six others were injured after an afternoon shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex formerly known as Loring Towers at 15 East Grant Street, near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire shortly after 4:30 p.m.

The Shooting

Minneapolis police officers entered the high-rise after receiving reports of an active shooter. Officers encountered heavy smoke or haze on an upper floor before coming under gunfire.

Three people ultimately died in the incident. Authorities said one civilian victim died at the scene, while another died after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. The suspected shooter was also killed.

Police Officers Injured

Three Minneapolis police officers were injured while responding to the shooting.

Two officers suffered gunshot wounds. One was treated for a non-life-threatening leg injury, while another underwent surgery. A third officer was evaluated for a minor injury.

All three officers were reported to be in stable condition.

Four civilians also suffered apparent gunshot wounds and were transported to hospitals for treatment.

Emergency Response

The first 911 calls came in at approximately 4:36 p.m. Officers quickly entered the building and moved toward the reported gunfire.

The incident prompted a significant police response, with state and federal agencies assisting local authorities. The FBI was among the agencies involved in the response.

Several nearby locations temporarily went into lockdown or sheltered in place as police worked to secure the area. The University of St. Thomas' Minneapolis campus and the Hyatt Regency hotel were among the locations affected.

Authorities later lifted the lockdowns after determining that there was no continuing threat.

What Happens Next

Officials said the area was secure by Wednesday evening. Investigators are continuing to examine the shooting and the circumstances that led to the violence.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation. Authorities are expected to release additional information as investigators continue processing the scene and gathering evidence.

The identities of the deceased civilians and the suspected shooter had not been publicly released in the initial reports.
