Video shows Staten Island man struck by lightning

A Staten Island man survived after being struck by lightning during a severe storm last week, with home surveillance footage capturing the dramatic moment.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon, August 27, 2026, on Todt Hill Road as thunderstorms moved through New York City. Local reports identified the man as Thomas Fahmy.

The Lightning Strike

Fahmy was walking toward his car when lightning struck near his foot. Surveillance footage captured a bright flash before he fell to the pavement.

Despite the shock, Fahmy remained conscious. He was able to get back up and move toward a nearby home while calling for help.

A neighbor, Stephanie Homan, heard Fahmy's cries and brought him inside while they waited for emergency responders.

Medical Treatment

FDNY paramedics transported Fahmy to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital after the strike.

Doctors monitored him overnight. According to reports, he did not suffer external or internal burns. Fahmy described experiencing intense burning, tingling, numbness and pain following the incident.

He was released from the hospital the following day.

What Happens Next

Fahmy has since spoken about the experience and expressed gratitude that he survived. He reportedly visited church days later to give thanks.

The surveillance footage has drawn attention because it shows how quickly a lightning strike can occur during a storm, even when someone is simply walking outside.

The National Weather Service advises people to move indoors when thunderstorms approach because there is no safe place outdoors during a lightning storm.
