Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, January 10, after receiving reports of a structure fire. When crews arrived, they encountered heavy fire conditions coming from the front of the residence, according to department officials.

Multiple occupants had already escaped the home by the time firefighters reached the scene, but one child remained unaccounted for inside.

Family Escapes as Firefighters Begin Rescue

Officials said two adults, along with two other children ages 4 and 13 months, were able to exit the house through a rear door. The family’s dog also escaped safely.

Fire crews immediately began an aggressive interior search after learning a child was still trapped inside the residence. Firefighters located the 2-year-old, identified as Isaiah Howell Jr., on the second floor of the home.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews removed the child within minutes and provided emergency medical care before transporting him to Riley Hospital for Children. Despite lifesaving efforts, Isaiah was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Fire officials noted that the rapid progression of the fire and smoke conditions inside the home made rescue efforts especially challenging.

Fire Ruled Accidental by Investigators

Investigators with the Indianapolis Fire Department have determined the fire was accidental. A possible electrical issue within the home is believed to have caused the blaze, though officials said the investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact source.

There were no indications of criminal activity related to the fire. Authorities have not released additional details regarding smoke alarms or other safety features inside the residence.

The home sustained significant damage, and the family was displaced as a result of the fire.

First Fire-Related Death in District This Year

The Indianapolis Fire Department confirmed this incident marks the first fire-related fatality within its service district in 2026. Fire officials expressed condolences to the family and emphasized the importance of fire safety and prevention.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” an IFD spokesperson said in a statement, noting the emotional toll such incidents have on both families and first responders.

The department continues to encourage residents to regularly test smoke alarms, develop escape plans, and address potential electrical hazards in their homes.

Community Support and Assistance

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family with temporary housing, clothing, and other essential needs. Officials said the family had lived in the Finley Avenue home for approximately one year.

Community members and local organizations have also begun offering support as the family mourns the loss of their child while caring for the surviving children.

Fire officials said counseling resources are available for affected family members and first responders involved in the incident.
