| Shaun Burton has been identified as the driver killed in the Bedford train crash that injured around 100 people and left nine in critical condition. |
British Transport Police have identified the train driver who died in Friday's rail collision near Bedford as 60-year-old Shaun Burton. The crash, which occurred on June 19 between Bedford and Luton, left around 100 people injured and prompted a major investigation into one of the most serious rail incidents in the UK in recent years.
Family Pays Tribute to Shaun Burton
In a statement released through British Transport Police, Burton's family said they were devastated by his death and extended their thoughts to everyone affected by the collision. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.
Burton had spent much of his working life in public transport, first in the bus and coach industry before becoming a train driver seven years ago. Colleagues described him as a dedicated professional who was widely respected throughout the railway industry.
Union Leaders Remember Dedicated Driver
Dave Calfe, general secretary of the train drivers' union ASLEF, described Burton as a "wonderful person" who was devoted to both his work and his colleagues.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the rail sector as coworkers remembered Burton's commitment to public transport and his positive presence at the depot where he worked.
Around 100 People Injured in Collision
The collision happened shortly after 5 p.m. on June 19 near Elstow, south of Bedford. Investigators said the 4:40 p.m. East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the rear of the 3:50 p.m. service from Nottingham, which was also heading toward London.
Authorities reported that approximately 100 people suffered injuries in the crash. As of Sunday, 28 people remained hospitalized, including nine passengers listed in critical condition.
Investigation Underway as Disruption Continues
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched a full investigation into the cause of the collision. Investigators are reviewing train data recorders, signaling systems, CCTV footage, and other evidence collected from the scene.
Network Rail said the incident appears to be an isolated tragedy but warned that recovery operations and repairs are expected to cause significant disruption for at least a week. Crews continue working to remove damaged rail vehicles and assess infrastructure damage along the route.
Rail Services Face Ongoing Disruption
Passengers traveling between Bedford and London have been advised to check for service updates as replacement transport and alternative routes remain in place.
Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators work to determine exactly what caused the collision.
