| A shooting spree in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges borough left three dead, including a police officer, civilian, and the suspect after a gun battle with police. |
Three people were killed, including a police officer, a civilian, and the suspected gunman, following a violent shooting spree in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges borough on June 22, 2026. The attack triggered a major police response and a temporary citywide shelter-in-place order as officers engaged in a prolonged gun battle with the suspect.
Gunman Opened Fire After Police Response
Montreal police (SPVM) were initially called to reports of a person armed with a long gun seen at a Hilton hotel window.
When officers arrived at the scene around 11:35 a.m., they were immediately met with heavy gunfire. Investigators believe the suspect had deliberately set up an ambush targeting responding officers.
Intense Gun Battle Outside Hotel
A prolonged exchange of gunfire unfolded outside the hotel as police returned fire.
The suspect, described as wearing camouflage clothing, was ultimately shot and killed at the scene. Authorities recovered a long rifle near his body, believed to be an SKS-style firearm.
Police Officer and Civilian Killed
Authorities confirmed that a male SPVM officer was killed during the shooting, marking the first police death in Montreal in 24 years.
A civilian was also killed in the chaos. Investigators are still working to determine whether the victim was struck by police gunfire or the suspect’s weapon. A female officer was critically injured but later stabilized, while another civilian sustained minor injuries.
Citywide Alert and Emergency Response
Following the attack, officials issued a shelter-in-place order across parts of the city for approximately three hours while tactical units secured the area.
Residents in the Côte-des-Neiges borough were urged to remain indoors as police searched nearby buildings and ensured there were no additional threats.
Manifesto Under Investigation
Authorities confirmed the suspect had prepared a manifesto before the attack, which was sent to multiple media outlets.
Police are reviewing its contents as part of the ongoing investigation into the motive behind the shooting.
Authorities Say Incident Not Terrorism
Quebec officials stated that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism.
Although the attack occurred in a historically Jewish neighborhood, authorities said there is no evidence that religious or community institutions were targeted. Local schools and businesses were temporarily locked down as a precaution.
Investigation Continues
The SPVM continues to investigate the full circumstances of the shooting, including the suspect’s background, planning, and potential warning signs.
Officials say further details will be released as the investigation develops.
