A 46-year-old passenger was injured Sunday morning after gunfire from a shootout on Interstate 94 struck a CTA Red Line train near the 95th Street station on Chicago's South Side. The incident occurred around 8:47 a.m. and temporarily disrupted Red Line service while authorities investigated.
Stray Bullet Hits CTA Red Line Train
According to investigators, multiple people inside three vehicles traveling northbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway were reportedly exchanging gunfire when a stray bullet struck a nearby CTA Red Line train.
The bullet shattered a train window, sending glass into the passenger area. Some reports indicated the damage occurred near the front of the train where the operator was stationed.
Passenger Transported to Hospital
Authorities said a 46-year-old passenger suffered injuries when shattered glass struck his face and body.
Emergency responders transported the man to Advocate Trinity Hospital. Officials reported that he was listed in good condition following the incident.
CTA Service Temporarily Suspended
Following the shooting, CTA officials temporarily suspended Red Line service in the area to allow investigators access to the scene.
Normal train operations later resumed after authorities completed their initial investigation and cleared the tracks for service.
Suspects Remain at Large
Investigators said the vehicles involved fled the expressway following the gunfire. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday, and authorities continue searching for those responsible.
The investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police and the Chicago Police Department. Officials are asking anyone with information, including dashcam footage from the area, to contact investigators.
