SWAT Standoff Lasts More Than Nine Hours in Logan Square

A Chicago Police Department SWAT standoff lasted more than nine hours Monday in Logan Square, forcing road closures and disrupting residents and public transit during Labor Day.

The large police response centered on the 3400 block of West Wrightwood Avenue near North Kimball Avenue. Chicago police shut down several roads around the scene as officers worked to resolve the situation.

The Brief

Police responded around late morning following a domestic dispute at a residence in the area. A man reportedly barricaded himself inside the home, prompting the deployment of SWAT officers and negotiators.

The standoff continued for hours as police worked to persuade the man to leave the residence. The incident drew a large emergency response and kept nearby streets closed for much of the day.

The standoff occurred on the same Logan Square block where former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lives, according to local reporting.

Authorities established a large perimeter around the residence as negotiations continued. Police also used armored vehicles and other specialized equipment during the response.

A person who had initially been inside the residence was safely released, according to reports. No injuries were reported in connection with the standoff.

The prolonged police operation significantly affected the surrounding neighborhood. Residents were kept away from parts of the area while officers continued working at the scene.

The Chicago Transit Authority also temporarily rerouted the No. 82 Kimball/Homan bus because of the police activity. The changes affected service around Kimball Avenue, Milwaukee Avenue, Kedzie Avenue and Fullerton Avenue.
